Buddhism in Burma and Thailand By: David D
Buddhism was
present in these areas before this time but it is to be noted that this
religion in these too regions flourished in this era. In Burma and in Thailand
the spread of Buddhism to these countries share multiple characteristics on how
Buddhism was brought to their lands. More specifically Theravada
Buddhism. The rise of this type of Buddhism in Burma and Thailand introduced
a new idea. This idea easily shows progress and is still visibly expressed
today as their main religion.
The growing importance of trade in this era to these regions has everything to do with their religious success. In Burma, Buddhism was existent all the way back to the time of King Ashoka in India. He sent monks to spread the Buddhist religion in Thaton, the trading center of southern Burma. Due to the increased contact with these Buddhist traders Thaton became the very center of Theravada Buddhism in Burma. The unification of Japan occurred over a long time period
sometimes known as the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
Before this time, Japan was in a series of civil wars resulting in
violence among citizens. Japan was going through a phase of political turmoil.
The reunification of Japan transformed the country that was going through
military conflict and political disorder into a united country under these
three leaders; Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyeshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
