Vietnam was originally conquered in the second century B.C.E by the Han dynasty. Vietnam was under this Chinese rule for a very long time. The Chinese wanted to make them apart of their massive empire. Vietnam gained several positive benefits from the Chinese over this period of time. Vietnam benefited greatly by being under the Chinese rule and expanding upon the Chinese ideas at the same time as being in fear of losing their cultural identity.
One of the main worries of being under the Chinese rule was that Vietnam was afraid of becoming just another small piece of land apart of the enormous Chinese empire. Vietnamese culture and traditions were completely different from those of the Chinese. China viewed their customs and traditions as being extremely barbaric. The Chinese were completely disgusted by the rituals of practiced in Vietnam. Vietnamese people were very proud of their legacy and didn’t want to be generalized and thrown into the mix with China.
Signification occurred in Vietnam as they were heavily influenced by the Chinese in almost every aspect. Vietnam started out entirely different from the Chinese. They spoke different languages as well as woman having more freedom and influence. Vietnam liked ideas from China including technology and political structure and ideas. They went to Chinese schools and took examinations to get political positions. Buddhism had become very popular and preferred over Confucianism to most Vietnamese people.
Vietnam was a completely different society in every way from China from the beginning, but over time they were majorly influenced and ultimately led to newer and better ideas. Vietnam started out unlike China and then grew fond of their ideas to put themselves ahead as they broke free from China and developed their independence after centuries under the Chinese rule.
